Cleveland Tennis Club
Located – Paxton Street, North Ward.
The Cleveland Tennis Club is one of the oldest sporting clubs in Townsville, having been established in the late 1800s. Cleveland’s court surfaces have evolved over the years, and it is now one of the few clubs in Townsville to feature synthetic grass courts.

Kalynda Chase Regional Tennis Centre
Located – Kalynda Parade, Bohle Plains.
One of the newest addition to Townsville’s tennis scene, the Kalynda Chase Regional Tennis Centre facilities including 12 plexipave courts with lighting. This modern and spacious complex is not only home to local clubs but also hosts regional and national tournaments throughout the year.

Norths Tennis Club
Located – Kennedy St, North Ward
Norths Tennis Club has a history dating back to the early 1900s. The original ant bed courts have since been replaced by two modern hard courts. Over the past 50 years, one notable figure is Kevin Gibbs. Known for his exceptional fitness and dedication to training, including skipping rope exercises, Gibbs achieved considerable success by winning numerous titles across the northern region, largely due to his consistency and physical conditioning.
Tennis Townsville – (Townsville Lawn Tennis Association - TLTA)
Located – Burke Street, North Ward.
Townsville Lawn Tennis Association (TLTA) was established in 1911. TLTA was the main center in the city for a long time. Home of the North Queensland Open for many years. With a rich history of tennis, the TLTA had a name change to Tennis Townsville Inc on 26 September 1995. Tennis Townsville provided invaluable volunteer support throughout the Davis Cup ties, which ultimately saw Australia defeat Uzbekistan in 1998 and Thailand in 2008.
The book “Play On” Tennis Townsville: Serving Up 100 Years of Tennis by Barbara Horsley is an essential resource for those interested in the history of tennis in Townsville.

Western Suburbs Tennis Club
Located – Lindeman Avenue, Heatley.
Western Suburbs Tennis Club was established in 1978 with only 2 concrete courts. The club started playing in a Saturday afternoon fixture competition with 7 teams and a membership of 57. Now a thriving 8 court centre it has always been referred to by club members as the ‘family club.’

Suburbans Tennis Club
Located – Charters Towers Road, Hermit Park.
The Suburban Team Champion Board has been operating since 1924. Historical records indicate a consistent presence in fixture participation over the years. Notably, Sid Goldring stands out as a distinguished member; his accomplishments include being a life member of both Suburbans and TLTA. In later years, Sid generously contributed his time by managing Saturday morning coaching fee collections.
Townsville Tennis Club – (Now part of Tennis Townsville Inc)
Located – Paxton Street, North Ward.
Townsville Tennis Club has a well established history in North Ward. It is important to note that research may sometimes lead to confusion, as the TLTA was previously referred to as Townsville Tennis in its early years. The club has a proud tradition of fielding highly competitive Fixture teams over the years. Additionally, the courts have recently been upgraded and are now integrated into the Tennis Townsville Complex.
University Tennis Club
Located – University, Douglas.
The university tennis club has historically played a significant role in Saturday afternoon fixtures, fielding a considerable number of competitive teams. Regrettably, the discontinuation of these fixtures has led to a decline in the utilization and maintenance of university courts. Although the courts are still present, they are currently in a state that renders them unplayable.
Valleys Tennis Club
Located – Cnr Ingham Road & Church Street, West End.
According to newspaper reports, Valleys was founded in 1925. In 1971, the club inaugurated its new clubhouse. Over the years, Valleys has had several notable players, including Richie Brant, who represented Queensland in the Linton Cup and achieved victory at the ITF Redcliffe Open in 1953. The club will also be remembered as a popular venue for social festivities following Saturday matches.
Willows Tennis Club
Located – Carthew Street, The Willows.
The Willows Racquet Centre was once a modern 6 court tennis complex. Originally managed by Doug Kingston and Ross Orford. Willows was once home to the Operation Tennis development squads for juniors. The courts have since been removed and replaced by the shopping centre development.
